Music

At Kenilworth, we believe that music is a powerful and universal form of expression that brings people together and enriches children’s lives. Music plays an important role in developing creativity, confidence and emotional wellbeing. Through engaging musical experiences, pupils learn to listen carefully, explore sounds and express themselves through performance, composition and appreciation.

Music also supports wider learning by developing important skills such as concentration, teamwork, resilience and communication. We aim to foster a lifelong love of music by exposing children to a wide range of musical styles, cultures and traditions. Through singing, playing instruments and exploring musical ideas, pupils develop both their musical understanding and their confidence as performers.

Intent

Our music curriculum aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to perform, compose and listen to music with enjoyment and curiosity. We want all children to experience the joy of music and understand its value both individually and as part of a community.

Through our music curriculum we aim for pupils to:

  • Develop a strong understanding of musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and structure.
  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of genres and historical periods.
  • Learn to sing and use their voices expressively and confidently.
  • Play tuned and untuned instruments with increasing control and accuracy.
  • Create and compose music individually and collaboratively.
  • Develop an appreciation for music from different cultures and traditions.
  • Build confidence through opportunities to perform and share music with others.

Our curriculum ensures that pupils build musical knowledge and skills progressively as they move through the school.

Implementation

Music is taught through a carefully planned and progressive curriculum that develops pupils' musical knowledge, skills and understanding across all year groups.

Our music curriculum begins in the Early Years, where children's musical awareness is developed through exploration of sound, rhythm and song. These early experiences support imagination, creativity and confidence, laying the foundations for a lifelong love of music. As pupils move through the school, this early enthusiasm is developed further through opportunities to perform, rehearse and explore their own musicality.

Music lessons are structured so that the key strands of the subject are interwoven to create engaging and enriching learning experiences that build progressively across the key stages. Lessons include opportunities for pupils to develop their skills in performing, listening, composing as well as developing their knowledge and understanding of the history of music, while exploring the interrelated dimensions of music.

Pupils' musical knowledge and skills are built upon year by year. Children are taught to sing fluently and expressively and to play both tuned and untuned instruments with increasing accuracy and control. They develop an understanding of the interrelated dimensions of music, including pitch, duration, tempo, timbre, structure, texture and dynamics and learn to apply these elements creatively in their own compositions and improvisations.

Our personalised curriculum, devised and overseen by our music lead, ensures that key knowledge and skills are revisited regularly and built upon over time. This approach enables pupils to deepen their understanding and tackle increasingly complex musical tasks while performing simpler skills with greater confidence, accuracy and independence. As pupils' practical skills develop, their understanding of musical history, composition and the elements of music also becomes more secure.

Pupils actively participate in a range of musical activities and experiences drawn from a variety of musical styles, genres and traditions. This helps them develop their musical skills while also building an appreciation of how music works across different cultures and contexts. Weekly singing assemblies provide opportunities for pupils to develop their performance skills, learn new musical vocabulary and celebrate cultural diversity through songs from around the world.

Music also supports learning across the wider curriculum. Songs, rhythms and musical activities are used in other subjects to help strengthen pupils' long-term memory and understanding of key concepts, such as number bonds in mathematics or historical facts in humanities subjects. In this way, music contributes both to pupils' creative development and to their broader learning across the curriculum.

Our approach includes:

  • Weekly music lessons that develop pupils' musical knowledge and practical skills.
  • Singing as a regular part of school life, including weekly assemblies and class activities.
  • Opportunities to play both tuned and untuned instruments.
  • Listening activities that expose pupils to a wide variety of musical styles and traditions.
  • Creative tasks that allow pupils to compose, improvise and experiment with sound.
  • Collaborative activities where pupils perform and create music together.

Our music teacher uses engaging resources and structured lessons to ensure pupils develop skills progressively. Children are encouraged to reflect on their learning, discuss what they hear and evaluate performances.

Music is also enriched through wider opportunities such as:

  • A weekly Key Stage 2 choir club
  • School performances and assemblies
  • Celebrations and events
  • Opportunities to perform to an audience
  • Exposure to live and recorded music

These experiences help pupils understand music as both a creative subject and a shared cultural experience.

Impact

The impact of our music curriculum is seen in pupils who enjoy music, participate confidently and demonstrate a growing understanding of musical concepts.

By the time pupils leave our school, they will:

  • Perform with confidence using their voices as instruments
  • Listen to and evaluate music thoughtfully
  • Demonstrate an understanding of key musical elements
  • Work collaboratively when creating and performing music
  • Show creativity and imagination in their musical work
  • Appreciate and respect a wide range of music traditions

Pupils develop confidence, creativity and resilience through musical experiences, helping them to grow both academically and personally. Most importantly, we endeavour for children to leave our school with a lasting enjoyment of music and the confidence to continue engaging with it in the future.
