Art
At Kenilworth, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children's entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. We prioritise teaching art once a week in every class. Art provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests.
The National Curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
We have designed our Art Curriculum so that all learners:
- Develop a passion for and appreciation of art
- Use sketchbooks to record their work
- Are provided with meaningful opportunities to express their creativity, acquire new skills as well as fine-tuning existing skills
- Reflect on pieces of art from different stimuli and are provided with opportunities to freely voice their thoughts and questions
- Are exposed to a range of historical and cultural movements that are meaningful to the society we live in
- Are able to explore topical issues through the use of art
Art in the EYFS
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities. They have opportunities to learn to:
- Explore the textures, movement, feel and look of different media and materials
- Respond to a range of media and materials, develop their understanding of them in order to manipulate and create different effects
- Use different media and materials to express their own ideas
- Explore colour and use for a particular purpose
- Develop skills to use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately
- Select appropriate media and techniques and adapt their work where necessary.
Art in Key Stages 1 and 2
From Year 1 through to Year 6, the children engage in six pathways:
- Drawing and Sketchbooks
- Print, Colour, Collage
- Working in Three Dimensions
- Paint, Surface, Texture
- Working in Three Dimensions
- Collaboration and Community
Our Art Curriculum is a planned journey with substance with pedagogy at the heart of how it is built for pupils to learn about art. This sequence of learning ensures that pupils revisit what has come before to build up and make connections in their learning. Domains of knowledge such as skills, artists, movements, appreciation and language are at the very heart of the Access Art curriculum.
